Harveys Seatbelt Bags for Disney Couture, Handbag of the Day

Filed under:

I’ve written about Harveys Seatbelt Bags on Luxist because I love them. But, one can argue they’re not the most traditionally glamorous bags, even if they are different, fun, and functional. But let’s say you’re a Disney fan, and you like an interesting handbag, and the word “couture” grabs you. Good news! Harveys introduces the Seatbelt Bag for Disney Couture, a website-only special collection in four styles.

Each bag is loaded with Disney details, such as a Mickey ears zipper pull, Mickey charms, custom red Disney lining with a monogrammed Harveys Logo and Mickey ear silhouette, and a comic-strip printed seatbelt body that tells the story of how Mickey seeks to capture Minnie’s attention by serenading her. Also featured: black nickel hardware, a Harveys for Disney Couture plaque, interior pockets (one for cell phone), an interior keychain hook, and a drawstring storage bag. Shown at right: the Disney Carriage Baguette, 8. Dimensions vary; prices range from 8 – 8. See the gallery for photos of the other three styles as well as Harveys Disney accessories.

Madoff’s Palm Beach Home Worth Less In Real Estate Slump

For a long time as Florida real estate values plummeted Palm Beach remained an enclave of protected wealth but it seems even that is starting to change. There is no bigger symbol of the change in Palm Beach than Bernie Madoff. Since Madoff’s arrest last year, Palm Beach’s fortunes have shifted a bit. Stores along Worth Avenue have closed and even the value of Madoff’s home has dropped by nearly two million dollars. Last year Palm Beach County officials assessed the taxable value of Madoff’s home at .3 million but a new appraisal that federal officials did in March says it would likely sell for .45 million. The home was seized on Wednesday along with two of Madoff’s yachts.

While prosecutors are trying to preserve as much of Madoff’s wealth as possible in order to redistribute it to his many victims, it might be smart to wait a little while before putting this home on the market.Palm Beach has seen some big sales in the past couple of years including .5 million for Sidney Kimmel’s mansion and 0 million for Donald Trump’s oceanfront flip. Currently the most expensive home on the market in Palm Beach is still Casa Nana which is listed at .5 million the same price it was last November when we covered it as an estate of the day.

New Billion-Dollar Project Proposed For Los Angeles

Filed under:

Downtown Los Angeles got a big boost this week with a proposal for a -billion hotel, office and retail project. The project from Korean Air is being developed by Thomas Properties Group. The two skyscrapers would replace the Wilshire Grand hotel and adjoining offices being used by Korean Air. The project would be the first time a South Korean developer has created a project this large in the U.S.

Los Angeles architect David Martin, a principal at AC Martin Partners, designed the towers which may have a photovoltaic skin to create solar power. One tower will host a 40-story hotel with as many as 700 rooms and several floors of condominiums. The other taller tower will be a 60-story building offering over a million square feet of office space and a plaza and shops on the ground level. What’s really amazing is that this would be the first major high-rise office building constructed in Los Angeles since 1992. Los Angeles needs a new skyscraper about as much as it needs an NFL team of its own (could be a lot or not at all depending on who you ask).

The project still has to win city approval but if it does construction could begin in 2011 and be finished in 2014.

Who Smokes Cigars?

Filed under:

A commenter on Hey, Bargain-Hunters: Cigar Prices already Hiked raised an interesting (and valid) question: why do cigar smokers care about a tax on cigars? After all, he continues, “Aren’t cigar smokers supposed to be, you know, big swinging dicks? Tough uber-capitalists, showing off their success?” It’s a reasonable question because few outside our community understand who we are and what we do.

Walk into any cigar shop in the country, and you’ll probably be surprised by the population sitting around tables, leaning on counters or sitting in luxurious leather chairs – depending on the store, of course. Yes, a handful will sport smartly-cut suits, Windsor knots in their ties and auras of financial invincibility, even in today’s harsh economic climate. The stereotype exists for a reason, in urban areas, especially. But, it’s not representative of the majority.

When you turn your gaze from the newly-less-wealthy asset manager to the rest of the shop, you’ll find a little bit of everyone. The regulars at my local shop include artists, construction workers, teachers, soldiers and accountants. A lowly blogger even shows up from time to time. We get a bit of everything. And, I saw the same trends in cigar shops in Boston, Washington, DC, Augusta, GA, Orlando and Seoul. There is no cigar smoker archetype.

Because we come in all shapes and sizes, our finances vary as well. For every comfortably wealthy customer, there are many who sit along the broad spectrum known as “the middle class.” Some smoke an occasional cigar; others enjoy several a day. And, the amounts spent vary. A cigar smoker who spends a day on his stick spends less than a pack-a-day cigarette smoker (we’re talking New York prices, because that’s my frame of reference). So, if you buy into the all-cigarette-smokers-are-low-income stereotype, cigar smoking among the middle class is proportionately less expensive than cigarette smoking – in fact, substantially less expensive.

Of course, the price of admission varies. I’ve seen homeless people walk into a cigar shop and spend on a cigar and investment bankers drop thousands of dollars on Opus X boxes. You can spend as much or as little as you like. Though your ability to consume higher-priced cigars can play a role in what you ultimately light, taste is a factor, too. Members of the financial elite who enjoy cigars that cost between and are happier than they would be spending or more on a label.

While it’s easy to dismiss the cigar culture as the domain of the super-wealthy, the reality is that many view this world as accessible luxury. There is nothing quite like sitting back with your preferred cigar, lighting it carefully and puffing serenely for an hour or two. You leave the pressures of the office behind for a while and enjoy the taste, along with a social scene if you frequent a neighborhood shop.

You’ll find that cigar smokers can be an incredibly tolerant bunch. Just don’t come in and complain about the smell, seriously. When you walk into a cigar shop, you should have certain expectations.

Hedge Funder Shows Off Art Collection

Filed under:

warhol marilynMost of the time Sotheby’s exhibit works they are going to be up for auction soon but the collection of Steven and Alexandra Cohen is more about showing off than selling off. Cohen, a hedge fund investor who owns SAC Capital Advisors, has quickly created a collection of some of the most desirable works of modern and contemporary art. He is displaying it at Sotheby’s New York in a loan-only exhibition, titled “Women” which runs through April 14. The 20 works show a variety of female forms by artists such as de Kooning, Warhol, Matisse, van Gogh and Picasso. Bloomberg reports that the works have a combined value of 0 million.

While Cohen may not be selling anything now he reportedly consigned at least eight paintings to New York dealers last year. He was said to be trying to raise money for a major purchase that he decided not to make. It may be a savvy move to let the public have a free taste of his collection now when nothing is for sale to whet appetites for private sales later. Or it could be that he’s trying to increase attention for Sotheby’s. His company, SAC owned 5.9 percent of the company as of March 6 according to an SEC filing.

Parmigiani Fleurier Kalparisma Watch Models For 2009

Filed under:

parmigiani fleurier kalparisma

Parmigiani Fleurier presents this new line of women’s Kalparisma watches, including the Kalparisma Ouranos with the diamond constellation motif. The watches each share the same signature Parmigiani case which looks particularly flattering on one’s wrist. The “Small Star” models use just that, a small spinning star as a subsidiary seconds display. Other models have a traditional second’s hand, and each model has its only unique character. The watch line features a 37.5mm wide tonneau case in 18k gold (either rose or white) with a bracelet or well matched strap. Various levels of brilliant cut diamonds decorate the cases and dials, with handsome guilloche engraving on the watch faces themselves. Inside the watches are PF331.02 automatic mechanical movements.

I find the gold metal bracelets particularly fine looking, being technical and functional, but still attractive. The Kalparisma watch line has always been conservatively ‘nice,” but never wild looking. This helps maintain Parmigiani is a maker of consistently attractive, though sober looking luxury timepieces. Designs have been known to get more experimental for the men’s pieces though, but predictability has been the mainstay for Parmigiani Fleurier. Expect the new Kalparisma line to be available soon.
